Touring the park summer 2024 through Night Out in the Parks, and then at our storefront in the fall, Free Street invited audiences to just lay down for a minute. Stop with the hustle; stop with the grind; stop with the idea that our labor is our value; and get with the idea that exhaustion will never solve our problems. REST/REPOSO is an original performance inspired by the New York Times bestseller Rest is Resistance, written by Chicago’s own Tricia Hersey, and adapted for performance in Chicago parks by a multigenerational cast of Free Street artists. Featuring a “rest DJ,” live napping, and Free Street’s trademark mix of joy and justice, REST/REPOSO invited audiences to consider the history of labor in Chicago and the power of collective refusal to participate in dehumanizing labor practices.
REST/REPOSO is co-directed by Katrina Dion and Coya Paz, with Ky Baity. The cast includes Annette Britton, Gina Montalvo, Alex Reed, Jo Schaffer, Stephanie Hebron Ortiz, and live music by DJ cqqchifruit. Design by Eleanor Kahn. Indoor lighting design by Alice Kim.
