"The greatest scientists are artists as well." -Albert Einstein
Philosophy: The usual pyramid of learning subjects will be flipped, placing arts as the foundation with all the others sciences growing out of creativity. A Super-Topic will be determined by the youth and research of the topic will be done by “peeling the onion.” Peeling the onion is the idea that you can take any simple idea and if you keep exploring that one thing deeper and deeper- you will soon discover the whole connected world.
Art projects will reflect the depth of understanding the students have about the topic. As the knowledge grows about the Super-Topic the art grows in depth and complexity. As the student’s art grows in complexity- the student’s curiosity of the sciences intensifies.
An example
The Super-Topic of Fish leads to the study of water and what is in water. How do we breathe and how do fish breathe. What is pollution? What is Environmental stewardship? A fish dance with rubber boots and handmade instruments.
How do you cook fish? And we all go cook some fish. Fish bones and whalebones and a trip to the field museum. How do you catch fish? Sea songs and water ballet. Fish kites and fish mobiles. 3-D sculptures of the inside of a fish’s life.
A final showing and storytelling to our families of the whole “fish adventure” concludes the Super-Topic of fish.
