October is in FULL EFFECT here at Free Street, with 3 different shows running in the space. We call them The Silly, the Scary, and The Sublime.
The Silly: DOPE: 420 Stories About Weed, Pot, Kush, Prisons, Parents and People. This play follows the life of a joint from seed to distribution, and is an exercise in how many ridiculous pot jokes you can make while still driving home a very serious point: the circulation of marijuana is heavily tied to violence on the border AND the incarceration of young Black men. One show left! Friday, October 17 at 6:30 Tickets here.
The Scary: THE HORROR. This immersive play, directed by Lauren Fields, turns the Free Street Space into a haunted hotel. Real Talk: the Free Street space can be a little spooky on a GOOD day, so imagine it decked out for terror! Two shows left! Wednesday and Thursday October 15 and 16 at 7pm. Tickets and info here.
The Sublime: We are thrilled to welcome Stephanie Diaz’s MARIPOSA NOCTURNA: A Puppet Triptych. This collection of three short pieces is beautiful, haunting, and unlike anything we’ve seen before. Featuring handcrafted tabletop and shadow puppets, original music and stop-motion film, and precise, expressive puppetry, MARIPOSA NOCTURNA combines traditional technique with postmodern sensibilities.
MARIPOSA NOCTURNA played to sold-out houses at 16th Street Theater in August 2014, and is the recipient of a 2014 National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Fund for the Arts Grant.
The Free Street run will include a beautiful, immersive folk-art-inspired community altar and live installation in honor of Dia De Los Muertos. Audience members are encouraged to bring a token or memento of a loved one to contribute to the altar.
