From a confusing grade school D.A.R.E. program to a woman busted for crossing the border with a gas tank full of marijuana, Free Street Theater’s DOPE follows the life of a joint from seed to eventual consumption. Created and performed by youth age 13-19 under the direction of Free Street’s Artistic Director Coya Paz, DOPE is a fast, funny, and unapologetic look at the U.S.A.’s most controversial drug. As marijuana slowly becomes legalized from city to city, state to state, where does this leave Black and Brown youth who continue to be the primary targets of drug enforcement, policing and incarceration? How do young Mexican immigrants reconcile party culture with drug violence back home? If weed could speak, what would she have to say?
