ONE DAY ONLY!
May 31 from 2-4
Free Street Theatre’s In/HOUSE Series presents 7 of 101: Zen Stories, an installation performance created by Chloe Johnston.
About the Piece: Starting in January 2014, a group of artists and writers from across the country responded to one story a day from Paul Rep’s 1939 collection Zen Flesh, Zen Bones. These artists are not zen scholars, nor had they read the stories before the project began. Their responses range from photographs to short stories, from straightforward analyses of the stories to associative rants. They are funny and absurd and heartfelt.
This installation performance features a selection of these responses, inviting the audience to get a glimpse of the great variety of ideas, jokes, and insights that are inspired by a single story. Using text, imagery, sound and live performance, this installation brings the dialogue to life. This installation also invites the audience to enter the conversation and add their own responses.
About the Director: Chloe Johnston is a writer, director, and teacher in Chicago and an Assistant Professor of Theater at Lake Forest College. Her original plays and performances have been called “lively and affecting” by the Chicago Tribune , “inspired” by the Chicago Sun-Times , and “moving, engaging, thought-provoking” by Time Out Chicago. She is an ensemble member with the Neo-Futurists and a founding member of The Laboratory for the Development of Substitute Materials, a performance collective that blends literature, science, and architecture.
